Dining Chairs - Chuck Norris' No. 3 Weapon of Choice

As of late there have been reports circulating the underground press that Chuck Norris is running out of dining chairs. Could it be that as the third weapon of choice (the first being his roundhouse kicks and the second being his fist) there's actually a shortage of dining chairs in the furniture market? Word on the street (from a credible yet fearful furniture source) has it that since Chuckie's demands for replacement chairs haven't been met, he's angrily spouting out facts about himself and hurling cans of Mountain Dew at anything that breathes.

When Chuckie was old enough to start kicking butt (age 3), he managed to uppercut his nanny by using his high chair after losing his balance; this was considered Chuckie's only ever documented accident. As he got older he got a hold of his first Parsons Chairs but quickly stopped, as the upholstered micro-fiber fabric wasn't sensual enough for him and because he had to use TWO hands to pick the darn thing up instead of his favored method of one hand to grab the evil-doer, the other to use the chair to clobber him.

Eventually Walker, er, Chuckie, decided that it might be a better idea to stick with lightweight wooden chairs that feature mortis and tenon joinery, figuring that solid construction meant a 1:3 fighting ratio. Rumor has it that while shopping for six dining chairs that would match his grandmother's dining set, a salesman wouldn't leave him alone and he ended up getting kicked in the face - from behind. This then led to Chuckie walking out with what would've been a $1500 purchase for the low price of $0.00. Two days later, six broken chairs and 18 disheveled and broken down men were found on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike.

Perhaps Walker, I mean Chuckie, should consider investing in metal frame chairs next. Virtually indestructible and modern, metal frame dining chairs are not only lightweight, they're quite resilient. Plus, these contemporary looking metal frame chairs usually come with a contoured look paired with stainless steel - ideal for cradling Chuckie's delicate frame yet tough enough to kick some major arse. With a possible solution to the dining chair shortage on the horizon, furniture manufacturers, evil-doers, birds and the sort have earned a night's worth of rest knowing that for one night and ONE NIGHT ONLY, Chuck Norris will not finish their sentences with a roundhouse kick.

Growing Up with Children's Bedroom Furniture - Part 1

Kids want to be able to express who they are and what better place to start than their own bedrooms? While adults usually get to choose between a California King or Eastern King sized bed, kids have a lot more fun options to pick from. Trundle beds, bunk beds complete with built-in workstations, even adding a head and footboard are among the many choices they'll get to grow up with. In this two-part article, we'll be able to go over what beds will suit your child up to his teenage years.

After your child finally outgrows his or her crib and toddler bed, it's time to move on to bigger and better things. Moving your child to a twin-sized bed is the next step, and there are a variety of styles that will suit your child. A great option to consider is purchasing a bed that comes with underbed storage for all your child's toys, clothes and extra linens. This style is perfect if your child's bedroom happens to be small in size, and as every parent knows, your child's toy collection will end up all over the place if there's no proper storage area. And, this gives your child an excuse to throw things under the bed!

Trundle beds are also another option if your child's friend or relative regularly stays the night. Oftentimes, you'll find that once your child doesn't necessarily need his pull-out trundle anymore, it can be easily replaced with underbed drawers. Trundle beds can accommodate two children; however, it may not be comfortable for long. My next suggestion is to go for bunk beds designed with mortis and tenon joinery. The good thing about bunk beds is that they're usually two twin beds stacked upon one another. Once your kids are ready to have their own rooms, or are even just over the idea of climbing into bed, you can usually disassemble the bunk to make two separate beds. Of course, this all depends on the design of the bunk and whether it's made of wood or metal.

In our continuing series, we'll next touch on futon bunk beds, workstation beds, and adding subtle mature features to your child's bed that even your teenager will appreciate.

The Unseen Dangers Of Coffee Cup Warmers

Coffee cup warmers will sell in every major supermarket by the year 2010, and they are more dangerous than electric blankets. More than 22% of house fires start by electrical item such as the coffee cup warmer. Most Americans today find some convenience in the common household coffee cup warmer. Our fast-paced lives do not allow us to slow down, stop at the microwave and reheat for the tenth time our chilled coffee. So low and behold the coffee cup warmer. Just plug this in anywhere you have an available outlet, seems easy enough. What most of us do not realize that in this fast-paced atmosphere we also do not have time to baby-sit this wonder product? Every label on electronic items like the coffee cup warmer reads, “Do not leave unattended”. Why this is so confusing to us, I do not know. Repeatedly the news blares out yet another incredible house-fire from electrical items left unattended.

Office Dangers

Most fast-paced work areas have use for an item such as the coffee cup warmer. It is much more attractive to have right at you desk with-in an inch of your mouse a heating element that conveniently keeps you from running to the microwave. Unfortunately, there are office meetings, phone calls, lunch, and just plain being busy. We are far too busy in fact to keep our eye on the coffee cup warmer. Just one piece of mail or small sticky note falling onto the heating element, this is all it takes and you are the next big news story.

Elderly and Coffee Cup Warmers

Some may think that the elderly have nothing but time to keep their eye on this very compact death unit. I must contest this sort of wayward thinking. The dangers of our poor little grandmas and grandpas using a coffee cup warmer are a little more straightforward. As we get on in age, the tendency towards dementia is a little more apt to happen. More than 10% of Americans today are living independently with some form of dementia. Coffee cup warmers are a popular gift to our elderly relatives. These little units have the capability of getting as hot as a 250-degree oven. This is hot enough to stick the skin right to the unit. One might think that it might hurt a little when an incident like that happens, but we Americans still keep buying these little miracle units. Consider yourself warned!

Flavored Coffee - Coffee with a Special Twist

Flavored Gourmet Coffee Beans

Coffee tastes great by itself, but for an extra special taste sensation, try gourmet flavored coffee. Some of the newest gourmet flavored coffee includes vanilla, macadamia, and even peanut butter. Other flavored coffees include French Vanilla, Toasted Almond, Cookies and Crème, and Hazelnut.

Flavored coffee is usually sprayed immediately after roasting for the best absorption of flavor. When choosing flavored coffees, be sure the flavoring is natural and not a chemical.

The higher grown the coffee plant the better flavored coffee bean you'll get. The sooner you grind the bean and make the coffee, the fresher and tastier will be the coffee. However, vacuum sealing and freezer storage can slow down this process to some degree, giving you 6-8 weeks at the most to enjoy a real full flavored cup of coffee.

It is hard to beat a good gourmet flavored coffee bean. Whether you like flavored or natural, whole beans or ground, dark or light, smooth or robust, the coffee industry will surely provide you with a coffee bean that will tantalize your sense and keep you coming back for more.

Flavored Syrups and Creamers

Another important addition to the coffee world has been the addition of many flavored syrups and flavored creamers to add to your coffee. These drinks usually start with a flavored syrup that is mixed with hot espresso and stirred. There are a host of coffee flavors and different flavored creamers or syrups.

There is a wide range of flavored syrups, including vanilla flavored coffee syrups and chocolate flavored coffee syrups. Don't be fooled, though, by blends that are actually mixed with low-quality beans and flavored coffees made with low-quality coffee that is given a new flavor to hide its bitter taste.

Many coffee shops such as Starbucks now offer a wide assortment of flavored syrups and creamers. Go ahead; explore; sit back; examine the phenomenon of custom flavored coffee.

The first time you visit a Starbucks and struggle to decide on what you want to try, it can seem a bit daunting. With so many different flavors, syrups, creamers, and blends, it can seem impossible to make a decision.

Yet it's worth the effort. With such a vast selection you can have a seemingly infinite number of different flavors to try as you create different blends.

Not only do these flavorings add a variety of new tastes, but these flavored coffee beans also add a whole new robust aroma. Flavored coffee products specialize in the customization of coffee and coffee related products to the awaiting consumer. And whether you are looking to satisfy a sweet tooth or just want something different, flavored coffee syrups put a great kick into any drink.

Caribou Coffee Offers Good Brew, Great Atmosphere

Caribou coffee may be the second-largest coffee retailer in the United States, but taste tests have ranked them first in flavor in recent years. The company, which began in Minnesota, now includes over 460 coffee shops that are located in 18 states throughout the eastern and central regions of the country. It is second only to the Starbucks Corporation in terms of size and number of stores. The history of Caribou Coffee has had its highs and lows since it was founded in 1992, but the origins of the company are interesting and inspiring to up and coming entrepreneurs.

In 1990, the founding members of Caribou Coffee, John and Kim Puckett took a trip to the wilderness of Alaska. After climbing to the top of Sable Mountain, they encountered a breathtaking view of the valley below – complete with a herd of caribou running by. They took this vision home to Minnesota with them, and two years later they opened the first Caribou Coffee shop in Edina, Minnesota. This inspiration that began the path to their dream has resulted in a company that strives for the highest quality of products and service in the coffee market today.

What does Caribou Coffee Offer?

In addition to a great, laid back atmosphere that can be compared to a ski lodge or a wilderness cabin, Caribou offers a wide variety of hot and cold beverages as well as baked goods to warm your bones and tantalize your taste buds. The menu includes most of the beverages that you would expect to find in your basic coffee shop today, including espresso drinks like cappuccinos and lattes. They also offer blended drinks with and without coffee, depending on your preference. Tea is another common item found at Caribou Coffee, and comes in a variety of types and flavors. Make sure to check out the selection of “Wild Drinks” as well, which include the signature concoctions unique to the Caribou Coffee stores.

A couple of years ago, this company also began a bakery side of the business which includes items like cinnamon rolls, muffins and scones to go with the beverage of your choice. There are even sandwiches available, so that you can enjoy your coffee at lunch time as well. For those die hard Caribou Coffee fans, there is also a selection of clothing available that sports the Caribou Coffee label.

While Caribou Coffee has had its share of growing pains over the years as the business has developed, there is no doubt that the company offers a quality product that many consumers enjoy. If you have never tried the beverages from Caribou, why not give it a try today?

Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans: A Fun Snack

Most people have some form of sweet tooth, and many also like the taste and smell of a fresh cup of coffee. Though the tastes of sweets and that of coffee are very different, they make a great match, since sugar helps to offset the slightly acidic bitterness of coffee. One of the best examples of this is the great taste of chocolate covered coffee beans. If you’re a coffee lover, a chocolate lover, or both, chocolate covered coffee beans make a great snack.

A Marriage of Flavors

Chocolate and coffee work well together, so much that some chocolates in Europe will have recommended servings that include serving with coffee, particularly dark chocolates. However, any kind of chocolate can make great chocolate covered coffee beans, even white chocolate. This sweet, crunchy snack gives you the mellow flavor of one of the favorite candies in the world with the tang and aroma of coffee. And even better, this is a snack with kick, since you’ll get a little caffeine rush from eating chocolate covered coffee beans.

Making Your Own

Some people are serious enough about their coffee to buy their own beans and grind them. If you’re serious about your coffee, then you can be just as serious about your chocolate covered coffee beans. By purchasing your own beans and chocolate, you’re guaranteed a quality product.

Making this great snack food is a snap; all you need is a pot to carefully melt the chocolate in, and some sort of device, whether a fork or a strainer, to remove the beans. Once the chocolate is melted, simply place the beans in the pot to coat, and then remove with the fork. Set on wax paper to harden overnight, and you’ll have a great snack that you made from scratch.

Buying Beans

The selection of coffee beans can be important in the making of chocolate covered coffee beans. You want to buy a medium or dark roast, since a light roast will simply be too acidic for chocolate covered coffee beans. This is one reason why chocolate covered espresso beans are a popular sell, since it’s a very dark roast.

You can bring out interesting flavor combinations with your chocolate covered coffee beans by purchasing flavored beans. Usually considered inferior by aficionados for creating a brew, they can add an extra kick to chocolate covered coffee beans. Give making this sweet, crunchy, snack a try and you’re sure to get hooked!

Instant Coffee

Instant Coffee is usually preferred for it's speed in preparation and has been on the market since 1950's. All you need to do is add hot water to the coffee granules and you have your cup of instant coffee. Instant coffee also has a long shelf life and is easy to store. It is important to store the instant coffee dry though.

Most coffee drinkers prefer the taste of freshly brewed coffee instead of instant coffee. Instant coffee is still very popular in the world and is often called 'Café Puro'.

Instant coffee is often produced from low quality coffee beans. The high quality coffee beans are usually used for the sale of whole beans. Although many coffee companies use high quality beans nowadays.

Instant coffee is produced by roasting, grinding and brewing coffee beans in a giant tank. The coffee particles are then extracted and the remaining liquid is evaporated using either a freeze drying or a spray drying method. The freeze drying process is the superior and more complicated one of the two.

During the freeze drying process the coffee liquid is frozen to minus 40 degrees Celsius. This causes the water particles in the coffee to form ice crystals. The ice is extracted from the granules using a method called sublimation, a special chamber dries the particles at a very low pressure leaving behind a soluble coffee.

There is another technique that is called spray drying. During spray drying the concentrated coffee is sprayed together with hot air into the top of a high tower. The water evaporates, due to the heat, as it falls, so that only the dried powdered coffee remains. The spray drying process is easier than freeze drying but many flavours of the coffee are lost because of the high temperature.

You can find some more information about Instant coffee here and here.

Tupperware Coffee Canisters

Tupperware coffee canisters were once a specific product known as Tupperware coffee keepers. These "keepers" had a unique seal on top that allowed you to dispense coffee by aligning the seal with the canister to form a dispenser hole at one corner.

Tupperware coffee keepers are no longer being sold by the company, although you can find them now and then on an Internet auction site or at a garage sale.

Tupperware coffee canisters now take the place of the coffee keepers. In fact, current Tupperware coffee canisters are not specifically for coffee. They are simply all-purpose canisters, several of which are a convenient size for storing coffee.

New Tupperware Coffee Canisters

As you look through a Tupperware catalog, you will find a number of options you can use for Tupperware coffee canisters. These four look good to me.

1. "Spring Daisy One Touch" 3 Pc. Canister Set: This bright, cheery set includes canisters that hold 5 cups, 8 cups, and 12 cups. Since coffee is usually purchased in 1 or 2 pound packages, the smallest of the three would make a perfect Tupperware coffee canister – with room to spare for your coffee scoop. The buttercup yellow top seals out air, keeping coffee fresh. The white canister, sprinkled with bold daisies in yellow, aqua, and rosy red, is sure to add flair to your countertop.

2. "Modular Mates" Round Containers: If you have less room on your cabinet top, or prefer a less colorful canister, you might choose one of the containers as a Tupperware coffee canister. Although only 3.5 inches in diameter, the third or fourth largest of these four airtight containers will hold a pound or two of coffee. The slim, tall containers are clear so you can see how much coffee you have. The air-tight seals come in red or blue to blend with your house décor. If you use all four together, you can also take advantage of the stack-ability of these canisters.

3. "Modular Mates Ovals": These canisters are another great solution to your search for Tupperware coffee canisters. Replacing the old silver and black canisters, as well as the old Tupperware coffee keeper, "Modular Mates Ovals" look like the canisters in #2 above, except that instead of being round, these are rounded rectangles. This set of 5 stackable canisters has several that would be great as Tupperware coffee canisters. Their sheer sides let you see easily when you need to purchase more coffee.

4. "One Touch Reminder" Canister Set: If you prefer canisters that are not sheer, but would still like to know when your supply of coffee is running low, this set of four white canisters is a good choice. Your Tupperware coffee canister will be chic in clean white, but a small front window at the base of the canister will let you know when to put coffee on the shopping list. This canister set also features "One Touch" seals that are said to go on and off with the lightest touch, while still sealing airtight and virtually liquid tight. The solid white canisters are topped with your choice of red or blue seals.

The Best Tupperware Coffee Canisters

In reality, the best Tupperware coffee canisters are those you choose to make into coffee canisters. At the end of the day, a coffee canister is simply a canister in which one stores coffee. So pick the Tupperware canister that appeals most to you, and make it into a Tupperware coffee canister by filling it with coffee.

How to Make Best Gourmet Coffee at Home

Making gourmet coffee at home is very simple; you only require learning a couple of things to go on with your process from an average cup to great. Following are few tips on making good gourmet coffee that you would enjoy the most.

Careful Storage

Protect your gourmet coffee from light, heat and other moisture substance. Move your coffee to an airtight container, or just keep it in a bag that is rolled tight. At higher elevations various factors come together in process of growing the best gourmet coffee. Store it in a cool and dark place or it is good to keep them in freezer as well for best preservation. The coffee bean full-grown at eminent altitudes is much stronger than those grown at lower elevations.

Grinding Coffee Beans

Grind your coffee only as much as you require just before brewing, otherwise it would oxidize and lose its flavor. It is suggested to burr the coffee grinder over a blade grinder as it has more consistency. Use the apt grind for your coffee maker. A medium grind is good for vacuum pot and a finer grind in case of a manual drip method.

Use Fresh Water

Your best gourmet coffee can be spoiled by bad water. Do not use distilled water as it makes a flat cup of coffee. You should use only fresh cold water. Filtered water is also suggested to use.

Measure

Using two level tablespoons of ground coffee powder for each six ounces of water is recommended. Adjust your particular taste according to the need and do not trust the calculation given on your drip coffee maker as they are normally wrong.

Brewing Method

Bad brewing methods may have a larger impact on the taste of coffee than does the quality of the beans. A good cup of gourmet coffee is brewed using the manual drip technique, a French press pot or may be a vacuum pot. Traditional electric drip coffee machines do a good job but select it carefully. Coffee could be kept warm on a burner for only 25 minutes before the flavor turns to bitter. Brewing coffee only for 5 minutes is good before you are ready to drink the same.

A guide to Latte Art - Free Pour

The milk

You need cold and fresh milk. Most people prefer full fat milk for Latte Art but it is really up to you, if you use a right technique then it doesn't make too much difference. Just make sure that the milk is fresh and straight out of the fridge. Do not expose it to heat or light before you steam it.

Never use the same milk again when you are working on Latte Art.

The jug

Use a stainless steel jug with a narrow spout. Make sure that the jug is cold and clean before use. Fill up the jug with enough milk for your cup and make sure that you have enough milk. Too less milk will causes the milk to heat up too quick so a little bit more milk is better. Do not worry about the wastage too much.

Thermometer

Use a thermometer that has a clip to attach to the jug. The thermometer should have a good size so you can easily read it. Make sure that the thermometer is adjusted right, you can do this by putting it in ice water and correcting the dial. Usually you can adjust the dial with a screw in the back.

Steam Wand

Always make sure that you turn the steam on all the way. Purge the steam wand before use. This will clean it from any condensation. Do not turn the steam wand on before you insert it into the milk. Your steam should have a pressure of 1 bar.

Espresso

The espresso is just as important as the milk. Make sure that the espresso is fresh and has a good thick and strong layer of crema. It becomes very difficult to create good Latte Art without good crema on your espresso.

Cup Size

It is probably easiest to use 2 ounces of espresso in a 6-8 ounce cup.

Steaming Milk

Start with the steam wand inside the milk. Turn on the steam completely. Hold the jug with two hands. Slowly lower the jug until the tip of the steam wand breaches the surface of the milk. You should hear a sh-sh-sh sound. Do this for only a few seconds, this is when you are forcing the bubbles in to the milk to create foam, it is called foaming or stretching. Be very careful when you lower the jug, you should not see any bubbles being formed. You should hear the foam being created but you should not see it. You only need to foam for a few seconds, do not make the mistake to foam too much. Do not foam over 40 degrees Celsius or 100 Fahrenheit.

Once you have enough foam insert the steam wand deeper into the milk. There is no need to move the jug up and down. You should have a whirlpool inside the jug, you are now texturing the milk. The milk is now twirling inside the jug and any bubbles that might be present will dissolve into the milk. Once you have reached about 65 degrees Celsius turn off the steam. Then take out the steam wand and clean it with a clean cloth.

Put the jug down with a slight tap on the work top. This will destroy any tiny bubbles that might have been visible on the surface. You should not have any more bubbles visible after this. If you do then you can gently tap the jug a few times on the counter to get rid of them. However, tapping the jug on the counter makes the foam thicker and is not advisable. If you foam and steam the milk with the right technique then you should not have to tap the jug on the counter.

Pour the milk as soon as possible. This is very important because the foam will start separating very quickly.

Pouring The Milk

We suggest that you steam the milk whilst the espresso is being brewed.

You should pour the milk as soon as possible. Hold the cup on it's ear and slightly at an angle. Start pouring the milk slowly in to the crema. You do not want to pour to slowly, this will leave the foam behind in the jug. You also do not want to pour too quick because this will break the crema apart. Pour slowly in a few spots in the cup to break through the crema.

Start pouring the milk in to the back of the cup once the cup seems just more than half full. Now slowly but very steady move the pitcher from side to side. This is a wrist movement and should be done just slightly. Keep moving it side to side in one spot in the cup until you see the foam appearing. If you see this happening than you have cracked it!

Once you see the foam break through the crema you can start pouring patterns.

Latte Art Rosetta

Rosetta / Leaf

Move the jug side to side until you see the foam appearing on the surface. Keep moving the jug side to side until you see a pattern appear. Now slowly move the jug backwards whilst still moving it side to side. When you have reached the end of the cup move the jug in a quick straight line through the pattern.

Quick movements from side to side will create a rosetta with lots of leafs. Slow movements from side to side will create less and thick leaves.

Heart

Move the jug side to side in one spot in the cup. Keep doing this until you get a big circle of crema. Slightly move the jug forward just a bit. Then keep pouring the milk on the big spot of foam until the cup is almost full. Finally move the jug in a quick straight line forward to finish of your heart.

Time To Practise

I have never met anybody who does Latte Art the first go. So don't worry if you can't do it straight away. It takes quite a bit of practise but if you stick to the right rules anybody can do it! Have fun!

Espresso, what is it?

We will try to explain here what exactly an espresso is. Let's look at some definitions first:

World Barista Championship rules:

A. An espresso is a one ounce / 30 ml liquid including crema, +/- 5 ml is allowed.

B. Each single espresso should be produced with an appropriate and consistent amount of

ground coffee.

C. Espresso shall be brewed at a temperature between 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit / 90.5-

96 degrees Celsius. (Refer to section 2.6 WBC Espresso Machine).

D. Machine brewing pressure will be 8.5 to 9.5 atmospheres. (Refer to section 2.6 WBC

Espresso Machine).

E. Extraction time must be between 20 to 30 seconds.

F. Espressos must be served in a 2 to 3 ounce / 60 to 90 ml cup with a handle.

G. Espressos should be served to the judges immediately complete with spoon, napkin,

sugar and water.

Espresso

This tells us mainly how an espresso should be made.

Wikipedia says:

Espresso or caffè espresso is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing very hot, but not boiling, water under high pressure through coffee that has been ground to a consistency that is between extremely fine and powder.

So, an espresso is an one ounce hot beverage that flows out from an espresso machine. It is hot water that has been forced with great pressure through ground coffee.

Diseases that are protected by Coffee

It is really surprising when a thing was considered questionable for your health actually turns out to have health benefits, normally with the condition to use it "in moderation." It has already happened with chocolate and alcohol, and now it's turn for coffee. Listed below are the diseases that are protected by coffee.

Blood pressure. It is proved from a long-term study that coffee might not increase the risk of high blood pressure over time. In fact moderate drinking for coffee would stabilize the blood pressure condition. Two cups of coffee a day is considered as moderate amount.

Cancer. Coffee may also have anti-cancer properties. During past few years, researchers had found that coffee consumers were 50% less expected to get liver cancer than compared to nondrinkers. A few studies have further found the effect of lower rates of colon, breast, and rectal cancers.

Cholesterol. Two substances in coffee — kahweol and cafestol — tend to increase cholesterol levels. Paper filters detain these substances, but it doesn't really help the many people who tend to drink non-filtered coffee drinks, such as lattes. Researchers have further found a connection between cholesterol increases and decaffeinated coffee, probably because of the kind of coffee bean used to make some sort of decaffeinated coffees.

Diabetes. Heavy coffee drinkers might be half as expected to have diabetes as light drinkers or could be nondrinkers. Coffee might comprises of chemicals, which reduces the blood sugar. A coffee habit might also augment your resting metabolism rate that in turn could help keep diabetes at bay.

Parkinson disease. Coffee appears to defend men, but not actually women, against Parkinson's disease. One probable explanation for this could be the sex difference might be that estrogen and caffeine require the same enzymes to be metabolized, and estrogen captures those enzymes.

Further coffee benefits:

• It is a way to stop hiccups

• Reduces ulcer bacterium

• Gets you enough potassium

• Helps in sweating and heart attacks

These were some of the benefits of drinking coffee, but however, one must consult his/her doctor before the actual consumption of Coffee.

Is Caffeine The Next Nutritional Border For Our Country?

America is being bombarded by 16 ounce lattes and mega energy drinks. It is now acceptable for our youth to consume several sugary coffee drinks or highly caffeinated energy drinks each day. Health officials will soon admit what I have been known to be brewing the last several years: We are a nation low on energy and in need of quick fixes!

Are you low on energy? You must not be alone. Coffee and energy drinks have become big business in this country. There seems to be a high profile espresso shop on every down town corner and in every large office building. The other day I walked into a convenience store and counted the energy drinks offered in the cooler. I was amazed to find 32 different brands and types being offered. (I live near a large college campus.) Energy drinks are now part of the American Culture. "Do more and get more."

Why are health officials concerned about this new "coffee and energy drink culture"? Highly caffeinated and sugary drinks quickly deplete our natural energy abilities. Caffeine tells the adrenal glands to produce more adrenaline. One big problem. We do not have an unlimited store of energy in our bodies. Energy reserves are restored by proper sleep, low stress and a proper diet. More than one or two cups of coffee a day is going to eventually empty the your natural energy reserves.

By drinking more than two or three coffee drinks a day you are robbing your body of the ability to keep a worthwhile store of energy available for use. It is a brutal cycle. The more coffee and energy drinks you consume, the less energy you actually have in your natural energy bank. Too much coffee and energy drinks causes poor sleep, detrimental weight gain and also weakens your immune abilities.

Don't get me wrong, an occasional coffee or energy drink will not kill you. Just like alcohol, beer and wine you must use moderation. The less you consume (both alcohol and caffeine) the healthier you will be. Here are five things you can do to push the energy balance in your favor:

1. Get proper sleep. Much harder than it sounds. When your body "tells" you that it is tired, that means it is time to recharge, not refill your coffee cup. Try not to consume caffeine after noon time. Caffeine can stay in your system for eighteen to thirty hours and disrupt proper sleep.

2. Stay away from high simple sugar content foods such as sodas. Simple sugars elevate then drop your blood glucose levels. This is very hard on the body and leads to more damaging diseases down the road.

3. Add a good green superfood to your diet. Because most of us consume a very processed diet we are missing many of the trace minerals and micro nutrients our system needs to achieve maximum energy and immunity levels.

4. Add adrenal building herbs to your diet to help rebuild your energy storing glands, the adrenals. Some good examples, ginseng, licorice, cayenne, garlic, gotu kola and hawthorne berry. By drinking less caffeine and adding some of these adrenal building herbs as your daily supplements you will be surprised at how this will help you get more from just one cup of coffee versus needing three or four to keep going.

5. If you need a boost from caffeine try something that contains guarana. Guarana is similar to caffeine, but it releases its energy more slowly and evenly into your system. This does not give you the energy roller coaster effect that most people experience when drinking high doses of caffeine.

Bar Tables - Getting That Extra Space You've Been Looking For

Tables. When you think about it, every room has one. A living room has end tables, coffee tables, bedrooms have night stands, dining rooms have dining tables, and even some kitchens come equipped with a table. So you could say tables are an essential for any room. A table will hold just about anything for you. In fact, tables originated sometime in 2600 B.C. Each group of people came up with their own versions that suited their cultural tastes as well as their necessity of function.

In this day and age, there are many styles to choose from. One such style is the bar table. Bar tables are usually striking pieces of furniture. Their designs are usually simple and come in natural materials such as glass, wood or metal. Bar tables also come in a variety of sizes to fit the needs of those who are going to use it. Just as regular tables come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so to with bar tables. As the name suggests, bar tables are designed for bars, clubs and discos primarily, but they can also be used by people who have indoor or outdoor bar areas in their homes or gardens to allow for convenient seating.

There is a wide variety of outdoor bar tables and furniture available made of weather resistant materials such as teak, a material commonly used to make teak deck furniture. This type of wood is resistant to decay of the teak deck furniture. Outdoor bar furniture sees a lot of use and abuse. Bar tables need to be especially durable as they are frequently exposed to all of the various elements, as well as frequent use if in a commercial setting. For non-commercial use, teak bar tables are good gathering places for those who would like a bar type atmosphere with their teak deck furniture. Since bar themed items often look out of place with regular patio furniture, teak bar tables and other bar related items need to be placed together to create their own area.

Outdoor bar tables require extra care, especially if they are made of softer woods but even if your bar tables are made of other substances, it's important to see to their care properly. Make sure to wash, whip and dry your outdoor bar tables. If you want something a bit more durable and less care intensive for your bar table, try a teak bar table, they carry such an authentic look, or metal, most have protective varnishes that remain on the metal, preventing things like rust from appearing, but they're heavy and cumbersome and the rust still seems to reappear. If you decide to choose a teak deck furniture piece, a teak bar table is one way to make a lasting impression on friends and family the next time you entertain. It will also provide you with extra space that is exactly what a bar table should be doing.

Our selections make it easy for you to enjoy classic teak furniture, a known facet of prestige and fashion. Teak deck furniture like bar chairs, bar tables, dining tables are the classic alternative for patio furniture and will always be a memorial purchase. Who deserves it better than you? Your friends will envy! - Enjoy your selections: Teak Wood Furniture

Why Buy A Round Coffee Table Or A Small Coffee Table?

When looking for a small coffee table or a round coffee table you need to first decide what the table is to be used for. Another consideration is where you will be placing your table and what size is your home and lastly what size is your budget. Finding the right piece of furniture to fill an empty space in a small room, and still be functional, a round coffee table or a small coffee table may be what you are looking for.

If you require the table to be a functional piece of furniture you will need it to be big enough to provide a place for coffee cups, bottles or snacks for every member of your family. A small coffee table or a round coffee table may not be big enough and you should consider a long rectangular table or two small square coffee tables. This decision of course rests on how many family members you have.

A round coffee table or a small coffee table may fit nicely into the junction of an 'L'-shaped sofa, but it can also fit neatly near a wall and serve as an end table, depending on its size.

How Else Can You Benefit From Your Coffee Table?

There are other ways to benefit from your small coffee table or your round coffee table apart from providing a place to put your drink. They can be used to place a lamp or even used for card games. Children also benefit from a small coffee table and also round coffee tables as they can use them as a meal table or a games table as they are low.

The size, color and material of your small coffee table can be almost anything you desire. It can be made from wood, glass or metal and in any size. A large round coffee table would be best suited to a large room. Whether made of steel, plastic or wood a round coffee table or a small coffee table may also be fitted with a drawer or shelf underneath it, to hold magazines or childrens' games such as cards, tiddlywinks and dominos. These tables can also be used to display a clock or an ornament, the list is endless.

How To Decide Which Espresso Coffee Maker Will Suit Your Lifestyle!

There's little homework to perform before you rush out and buy the first machine you come across. Your lifestyle plays an important role. Espresso coffee makers now come in three basic models; manual, semi-automatic and fully or super auto-matic.

What's your taste and level of coffee drinking? This is important in establishing before you buy. A light drinker won't be requiring the talents of a mass producing super automatic while a heavy drinker may eventually get frustrated with using a manual machine all the time. The other factor is budget and not everyone has the spare cash to go out and buy a $4000 super automatic model. Let's take a look at the three levels of espresso coffee maker so you are better equipped to make a choice.

Choosing An Espresso Coffee Maker

Manual espresso machines have been available to the home maker for quite some time now and in their time, we're the "ants pants." People who owned one 10-15 years ago were considered trend setters but how times have changed.

Manual machines are best suited to light drinkers who want to have control or a say in how their "cup of joe" comes out the other end. Lever operated, the time required to produce a cup may be too much for some in our "want it now" world but think of the satisfaction you'll get knowing you produced a cup of brew with your own hands. Let me say, I'm one of the impatient types so it's not a manual for me. Prices can vary but some machines can set you back over a $1000. Worth it if you don't mind having to get your hands a little dirty!

Semi-Automatic

The semi-automatic models give you the best of both worlds combining both user control and automatic features. They vary quite a bit in price ranging from under $100 to well over $1000. Most models require the user to start and finish however, some more advanced machines allow the operator to program the quantity of espresso required. They are suited to heavier drinkers and for those people who tend to entertain a little although the super automatic machines are better suited to the latter option.

Fully Or Super Automatic

These are the "rolls royce" versions of espresso coffee makers. Be prepared to part with a good deal of the "green stuff" to purchase one but they are worth every cent, particularly if you are the type of person who needs coffee "drip fed" on a regular basis. Prices can start from as low as $300-$400 however, the top machines can set you back anywhere from $3000-$4000.

It's hard to mess up a cup of coffee with the super automatic; it grinds the beans, tamps the grounds, spews out a shot of espresso and even separates the unwanted waste. What more could you ask for. But it doesn't stop there as the features are numerous including digital display, automatic steaming and frothing, programmable buttons allowing you to determine strength, volume, small, medium or large cup and temperature. A coffee lovers dream!

It's Your Choice

Decide on the level of espresso coffee maker that suits your needs before you go out and buy. It's almost pointless to blow money on a fully automatic model when you don't drink much of the black stuff unless, of course, you entertain regularly.

Addiction - Is our Addiction Killing Our Kids?

Depending on the definition of addiction that's used, many of us could be considered addicted. The most common definition of addiction is an uncontrolled craving that drives us to continually seek and use a drug or alcohol. Drop off the drug or alcohol limitations and we're all subject to the addiction label.

Consider television. How many of us have special broadcasts that we regularly Tivo © or otherwise copy when we cannot watch them? You only need to listen to the daily discussions in a typical lunch or break room to pick up on the popular shows of the previous evening. Is this an addiction? Another definition of addiction is the strong emotional and or psychological dependence on a substance. Replace substance with your favorite television show and you can see that you may be addicted!

The growth in Coffee establishments like Starbucks also indicates a growing public reliance or addiction. How many people on a daily basis stop at a local Starbucks or other coffee house for their 3-8 dollar a day fix? Legality aside, is this really that much different than the drug addict getting a daily packet of his drug of choice? Another definition of addiction uses terms like compulsive drug use, psychological dependence and continued use despite harm. Chronic coffee drinkers could easily fall into this definition simply by substituting the words "drug use" with the drink of choice. The argument that coffee has benefits can also be used for many abused drugs.

There are many addictions growing in our society. Consider food. There is a growing segment in society that simply doesn't know basic living skills. These people are dependant on the neighborhood fast food places to provide meals. Is this an addiction? These folks are not the uneducated but fill the legions of housing tracts and sub divisions across the country. A quick look at the local supermarket will validate this possible addiction. Prepared and pre-packaged food continues to take up ever increasing amounts of space. Even pre-made lunches are available so families no longer need to prepare meals.

Have we become so addicted with the thought of convenience that we're willing to allow our children to suffer becoming obese due to our food choices? We are unwilling to prepare healthy food and instead increasingly rely on pre-packaged, quick and fast food instead of doing what we know is right for our children. Unlike other addictions, society is encourages this behavior by providing justifications like we're busy, two income families, etc.

In the end, we need to consider the consequences of our actions. While buying the 5 dollar coffee drink may make hurt your finances, the addiction to convenience may be killing our children. It's setting our kids up for a life of weight struggles if only because they will lack the skills needed to make healthy food choices and prepare real food.

Factors resulting best Gourmet Coffee

If you are looking at the most famous and best gourmet coffees, then Jamaica Blue Mountain, Kona, and Costa Rican are most common trait. They are grown in volcanic mountain regions. Like the finest wine region of Italy and France, the best gourmet coffee have an areas were the coffee bean flavor thrives. The two most significant aspects of the best gourmet coffee are soil and altitude.

At higher elevations different factors come together in process of growing the best gourmet coffee. Late afternoon cloud cover defends the coffee plants from an undue amount of direct sunlight. The clouds comprises of moisture, which lightly waters the coffee plants through its leaves other than through its roots.

The best gourmet coffees are mainly rated with a SHB rating that means Strictly Hard Bean rating. The coffee bean full-grown at elevated altitudes is much stronger than those grown at lower elevations. This difference places the coffee bean in the group of the best gourmet coffee rating on world coffee markets.

The disadvantage of growing this coffee at much higher altitudes is the difficulty in agricultural process. Farms at this level are near the peaks of mountain formations that are very steep. You could even imagine the trouble of driving vehicles to these isolated locations with few paved roads. At times the ground is near about at a 45 degree angle making it very tricky to plant, farm, inspect and then pick the coffee beans from side of a mountain. More manual labor-intensive is necessary not only for farming but also for transporting the baskets important with the best coffee beans.

The distance of these locations also makes it a long and very difficult to transport them to the ports of allocation to world markets. The roads are frequently rough and stony winding up and down mountain sides and frequently beside an unsafe cliff. You could imagine the intrinsic danger concerned just in transporting a heavy truck load of the best gourmet coffee. The farmers would stride along side their ox drive cart dragging their payload. The farmers would paint multi-colored designs on the large wooden ox cart wheels that have become a sign of Costa Rican heritage even to this day.

Gourmet Coffee Beans - 10 Reasons to Stop That Morning Run to the Local Coffee Shop

1. Coffee beans from many of the popular local coffee shops are just plain bitter and over roasted. Darker doesn't necessarily mean better, many times just bitter.

Don't believe me? Just ask Consumer Reports. In February 2007, a panel of trained testers put a cup of Starbucks up against some STRONG competition: McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, and Burger King. McDonald's wins with their Premium Roast being labeled 'cheapest and best.' Starbucks finishes dead last after being judged as "strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open." I guess most expensive doesn't always mean best.

2. Save money. More than you realize. Really!

Gour

On average, a cup at a shop is going to run you about two bucks. Two cups a day, 6 days a week(let's pretend your religion doesn't allow you to drink coffee on Sundays) comes to nearly $1250 a year! Now suppose you're a college kid spending the money from student loans that will accrue interest over the next 20 years. I don't even want to go there(no one told me about this when I was going to college.) Brew your own and put that 4 bucks a day into a compound interest savings, and you'll have a balance of over $55,000 by the time you're 40. Try it out for yourself: Interest Calculator

3. Two bucks for a supposedly "TALL" cup of coffee? (and just by what standards do they consider what they serve "TALL"?)

An average pound of gourmet coffee beans runs anywhere from around $10 to about $20. The average home brewer can make around 10 pots of coffee from a single pound of gourmet coffee beans, which in turn should give you around 10 cups of coffee for each pot. That's 100 6 oz. cups of coffee from one pound of coffee beans. Ok, now what does that mean? Coffee chains are making astounding profits from every pound of beans they roast, grind and sell. Makes you want to go into the coffee business doesn't it? Ok. So brew at home, and you end up paying about 10 to 25 CENTS per cup of coffee. Brew at home and even the most expensive, rare coffee you can find (such as the Kopi Luwak bean) and it'll still only cost you under 4 bucks for a 12 oz. cup. (by the way, if you don't know where Kopi Lowak comes from, I won't tell you about that now. I don't want to be the 'butt' end of a joke, especially one that will run you around $150-$180 per pound!) This all sounds much better to me, doesn't it to you, too? And guess what? It will all TASTE MUCH MUCH BETTER!

4. Shouldn't most people want FRESH coffee?

Coffee bean's two greatest enemies are air and moisture. How long has that cup of java been sitting there warming before you get it? The only way to know you're truly getting fresh ground coffee is to buy the beans online where they are roasted and shipped the same day and grind yourself. It is best to buy fresh-roasted gourmet coffee beans in amounts that you will use within 7 to 10 days. I personally recommend grinding only what you need and storing the rest of the whole beans in an airtight container. I used to think storing the remaining coffee beans in the freezer or fridge was best to keep them fresh. I discovered the worst thing for beans is any extreme temperature, or exposure to air, light, moisture or strong odors.

5. Impress your date with your homemade brew!

Ok, coffee may not be the best thing to sip before that first good-night kiss, but the knowledge you can share about how you made the perfect cup of joe can be perfect first date conversation! Imagine what might happen if you tell her that you even roasted your own beans? Just make sure to make a prior investment in a good sugarless gum or mint to follow up the cupping(the coffee tasting...what were you thinking?)

6. It really doesn't make you cooler than you already are.

Ok. Call me crazy, but do you think that a large portion of those that are hooked on Starbucks could possibly just be hooked on the pretentiousness associated with the whole idea of being a coffee drinker? That might upset a few people, but we're being honest here, right? Forget what people think and just make your own. Drink what tastes best to you, period. Then, create a fancy label with your logo and slap it on the side of your coffee cup. You'll be impressed with your own branding. Hey, you own the company, right? And no one has to repeat back to you what you just ordered...unless you just want to stand in the mirror and impress yourself.

7. Grinding, brewing, even roasting your own coffee can be fun.

The investments you make in the beginning in coffee equipment(whatever matches your budget) can last you a lifetime and become quite a great hobby. People LOVE to talk about coffee(especially the Kopi Lowak I've found.) Just how much can you go into depth about how they poured and served you that last cup of coffee at Starbucks. That story might last you all of say...30 seconds? Learning about the history of coffee can lead to great conversations with friends, family, or even to share to the world in an article like this!

8. No waiting in line.

The only waiting you'll be doing is when you're grinding and brewing. But then, you'll be grinding and brewing, so that's not really considered waiting is it?

9. Conserve energy, help fight global warming, and support charities.

Ok, grinding and brewing your own coffee at home probably won't achieve any of these things, but you should do them anyway. I just wanted to mention that.

10. Did I mention it will TASTE BETTER?

I guarantee it! If you're not completely amazed with the difference you'll see between you're own freshly ground and brewed coffee and the bitter, awful stuff you'll be exposed to commercially, I will...well, I'll be really shocked. And sad. And probably feel really bad. But I'd feel worse if I had to start drinking bitter coffee, so now I feel so better again. Really though, I think you'll be glad you did. I personally recommend trying Kona blend gourmet coffee beans. I absolutely love pure Kona coffee, but it's a bit expensive, and a Kona blend still gives you a great taste that's easily affordable. Then pick up the best coffee maker you can afford and enjoy!

Make a Quick Cup Of Coffee With An Espresso Coffee Pods

Why not pump up your next cup of coffee with a Dowe Egberts Switch Espresso coffee pod. If you enjoy coffee and espresso and you want to enjoy a quality drink at home these espresso coffee pods are ideal. The time it takes you to measure out the espresso, press them into your machine, make your drink and then clean up can be quite time consuming which is why the coffee pods are ideal. Espresso coffee pods are a quick way for you to brew quality espresso/coffee drinks without a lot of work or clean up.

What Is An Espresso Coffee Pod And Where Can You Find Them?

Espresso coffee pods are like pre-packaged coffee filters. The espresso or coffee is sandwiched between the filter paper, forming a pod about two inches in diameter. You use them in the same way that you would brew coffee in a traditional home coffee pot, only without the hassle of having to measure out grounds. However if you buy a Dowe Egberts Switch pod you do not even need a coffee machine. These pods are designed to be used on the go. They are designed to be 'pumped' with your thumbs to provide a frothy, creamy coffee. They are available in lots of different flavours and can be served hot or cold. With the other espresso coffee pods they need to be placed into a espresso coffee pod machine. You just pop the espresso or coffee pod into a compatible machine, and your work is done. Clean up is just as easy, since the only thing you have to do is throw away the espresso/coffee pod and rinse out your machine.

Equipment needed and where can they be found?

If you want to make an espresso coffee using an espresso coffee pod and not a dowe egberts coffee switch pod you will need to purchase a espresso coffee pod machine. Espresso coffee pods are designed to work with most machines so there's no need to have to purchase anything new if you already own one. Basically espresso coffee pods are just making the process a lot faster and easier for you. Espresso coffee pods are available in most forms including Starbucks and Nestle. Espresso coffee pods save you time, without skimping on quality. You can still brew quality espresso or coffee, and you can enjoy that fact that is has already been packaged for you to brew right away. With the introduction of the new Dowe Egberts Switch coffee pods you also have the luxury of choosing speciality cold coffee as well as flavored espresso coffee pods. Bothe standard espresso coffee pods and dowe Egbert switch coffee pods can be purchased at your local convenience store and local garages.

Enjoy The Health Benefits Of The Ganoderma Mushroom

In the West we tend to think that almost all health problems can be cured by the recently invented drugs of the modern pharmaceutical industry. However, in the East and in traditional societies everywhere, people have been successfully using natural remedies for thousands of years.

One of these remedies is the Ganoderma or Reishi Mushroom which is known as the "Mushroom of Immortality" by the Chinese and the Japanese, who have used it to treat a wide variety of diseases for the past 4000 years.

So what does this miracle mushroom do? It might be better to rephrase the question and ask "what doesn't it do," because in traditional Chinese literature it has been called a "panacea" or cure for all diseases

Typically in oriental medicine this mushroom has been used to treat insomnia, gastric ulcers, neurasthenia, arthritis, nephritis, asthma, bronchitis, hypertension and poisoning.

Since the late 1960s medical researchers have been studying the mushroom to find out how it helps the body and to see how it can be used to cure and prevent disease. They have found that the active ingredients in the Reishi mushroom are anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory and have begun trials in which the mushroom has been used to treat: migraine, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, constipation, menstrual pain, kidney detoxification, gastric ulcers and immune system problems.

One of the most serious contemporary medical problems is cardio-vascular disease, which is caused, to a large degree, by a lifestyle that is low in exercise and high in fat. Once again, this ancient remedy may provide to be a boon for this serious health problem.

Researchers at the Nestle Research Center in Switzerland are impressed with the Ganoderma mushroom, calling it "a renowned medicinal species." In one of their studies, using hamsters and pigs, oxygenated lanosterol which was derived from the Ganoderma, reduced cholesterol by 9.8%

These researchers concluded that Gandoderma Lucidium could have a great role to play in the treatment of cardiovascular disease in the years ahead and looked forward to "innovative new cholesterol lowering foods and medicines containing Gandoderma Lucidium."

Similarly, researchers are also looking into the use of Ganoderma in the treatment of cancer, and have found it to be effective in regressing the growth of certain types of tumors.

If you want to start getting some of the benefits of the Ganoderma mushroom you don't have to go to Japan or China or dig mushrooms in a forest, because several companies are already distributing foods and health supplements based on the Ganoderma mushroom. It is now possible to buy coffee and chocolate products that have been enriched with Ganoderma as well as capsules, toothpaste, soaps, lotions, and creams that include this miracle mushroom in their ingredients list.

Mike Vincent is health food specialist and distributes food supplements through his site He recently launched which offers a variety of Ganoderma Mushroom product.

Coffee - Pros/cons Of Health

A new cottage type industry has sprung up over the past twenty-five years that has looked at the health aspect of coffee drinking. It's no surprise because worldwide over four hundred million portions are drunk daily. However, health experts have questioned its safety. Recent studies have shown that the benefits may outweigh the risks.

The prime ingredient in your cup of cappuccino is caffeine. It a known type of stimulant. Blood pressures rise, heart rates increase and sometimes this can result in irregular beats. However scientists are sure the effects are only mild and only temporary. In contrast to this, new information suggests certain healthy aspects.

A cure for cancer? No – plenty of evidence shows that it may help minimalise any risk of colon cancer, but only if you drink four plus cups a day. Unfortunately that level of drinking could have counteraffects also.

Heard the saying, everything in moderation? Well this is also true of coffee. As with wine, coffee has antioxidants that do protect you against heart diseases and some cancers. It removes the cells that destroy oxygen from your blood. However, others contend that you get more from apples, cranberries and tomatoes. Others suggest vitamins, minerals and fibre in vegetables and fruit are best.

Chinese scientists show that drinking your coffee can reduce the horrible symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. Drinking regular and decaffeinated coffees, according to the Scandinavians and Americans may also reduce type 2 diabetes. Note - Scandinavians have the highest consumption worldwide.

It is also said that it may help in the reduction of kidney and gallstones. Improvements in digestion because of the increase in the stomach's acid are also apparent.

If you are an asthmatic, ask your doctor about evidence that it can help lower constrictions in airways. Interestingly, coffee has theophylline, a well-known bronchiodialator.

Unfortunately there also risks. It is known that male sperm swim fast, go further and last longer in coffee laced fluids, but female fertility can suffer. Others may suffer high amounts of homocyteine levels in their blood, which can cause heart disease if you drink too much. Harmful LDL cholesterol has been found due to increased levels of cafestol produced during the European water boiling process. Thankfully filters and percolators remove most of it.

There has been a noticeable rise in calcium loss and a decrease in bone density in coffee consuming women versus those who don't. Four cups daily may give you incontinence. Others may find sensitivity to caffeine that in my personal experience with one main coffee-house can cause hormonal changes to the point of getting non-malignant breast tumours.

Fortunately the benefits do outweigh the risk as long as you stick to moderate drinking. However for those truly caffeine addicted folk, especially those who cannot survive on moderate levels, try drinking a cola. You can get your fix with 1/3 caffeine to every ounce. There again maybe a cola versus a latte is not worth the gamble.

Coffee Machines - What Extras You Need

Since coffee was first made there have been machines to do the brewing. The Turkish Ibrik was the first coffee maker invented. It's still in use in the coffeehouses of the Middle East and Turkey, providing one of the strongest drinks around, but needs no filters.

Most machines are designed to drip. Put the water into the top of it, let the coil heat it, just like a kettle does, and then watch the boiling water funnel through your grind and into a pot made of glass, that sits on a heated metal plate. However, this is very basic, and there is so much more that other machines can do to make your life easier.

The modern ones have developed so much that they do everything except play your latest music dvds. Most now come with LCD displays that tell you what time it is, the brewing time, and the temperature. They even have timers and other information.

Brewing control is still very minimal. Auto-switchoffs are useful for those of us who simply forget about it. I'm a fine example of someone who is extremely busy and cannot wait for the pot to fill. I take out the pot before the stream has finished. Once upon a time, the coffee would not stop dripping and splash onto the plate. Thanks to this new feature there is a temporary stop in the flow while the pot is removed. The LCD is especially useful as it lights up the darkness for those of us who get a very early start.

The new European pod machines are probably the niftiest invention because little or no cleaning is involved like the one-cup coffee makers of the past involved. You use paper filters that already contain pre-measured coffee and allow the boiling water to properly filter through the grinds. Once the brew is finished you throw them away. This is extremely important if you are like me, the busy person who does not have an aversion to cleaning, but very little time to do so.

The one cup coffee makers are a great addition with their easy to buy paper filters, perfect for us city folk and the poor quality water we get. However, permanent filters are set to replace these. The pods can use either, but people are still arguing over the affect on your drink if do use paper filters in them. The choice is yours really.

If you really want to splash out then get a machine that has a built in grinder. Personally I prefer the pleasure of a separate machine because the cleaning up afterwards is that much easier. I still have yet to find a machine that roasts, grinds and brews. Have you seen one yet?

Would that be going asking too much? It may be that the traditional way is best. I don't hear any complaints from Turkey, and their coffee is absolutely delicious. My coffee has not been as good lately. I wonder why?

Focusing on latest news in roasting, Peter J. Wilson published for You can learn about his contributions on one cup coffee makers at

Making Changes

I see two roadblocks to patients making the changes necessary to heal and to be healthy. The first is education. Meaning, they may be doing things in their life where they are simply unaware of the consequences. An example: Most people know that caffeine is not very good for their body. Therefore, many people will opt for decaf coffee; however, most don't know that while decaf coffee has less caffeine, it has not been completely removed. In addition, there are other naturally occurring chemicals in coffee that can cause symptoms/health problems. These chemicals are called phenols ("fee-nawls"). Phenols are largely what give natural foods their brilliant colors, flavors and odors. Coffee (regular and decaf) is loaded with phenols, giving it such distinctive color, flavor and a (terrific) smell. I'll admit, it's hard to walk by the coffee shop at the mall and getting a whiff without having a bubble pop up above your head and Homer saying "mmmmm, coffffeeeeee aaghhhhh"!

It's important that you understand that phenolics can be a strong irritant to the body. They can irritate the digestive tract, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, adrenals, kidneys and bladder. In addition, coffee is very acidic, and can greatly disrupt the body's pH and blood sugar balance, especially when consumed on an empty stomach and first thing in the morning.

So knowing all of this can help patients and consumers make better choices. I'll be the example: I do not avoid coffee completely; I have a few cups per month, as I do enjoy it. I NEVER drink coffee on an empty stomach and I always have decaffeinated (so not to disrupt my sleep quality). I also make a good attempt to use alkalizing foods (like green leafy vegetables) or an alkalizing supplement to counteract coffee's acids in my body. It is nice to not be addicted to the affects of coffee, and I feel I can have it because I want it, not because I need it.

The second roadblock patients seem to suffer in regaining and maintaining their health are the skills to make changes in their life. I think we find comfort in statements like "old habits die hard". It is this thinking that keeps us from growing, changing and improving our lives. Unfortunately, it is when we hit rock bottom or contract a serious illness that we decide to make changes; often this is too late, as we may have squandered our health, our youth and our vitality.

So how do we make change? Once we have the knowledge (education) of what we need to change, it takes personal skills to make better choices. For most, when we realize we have to make changes, it boils down to our "will-power" to do so. This is why so many patients don't want to know what will truly help them get well, as they know it will require work on their part to make it happen.

This is how America has gotten stuck in the mentality of "take this pill and everything will be alright." And that's not a jab just at conventional medicine; it is also aimed at a lot of natural medicine practitioners who have gotten stuck in the "green medicine" mentality: take this herb for a cold, take that homeopathic for headaches, etc. In natural medicine circles, we have our little anti-drug statements like "headaches are not from a deficiency of aspirin in the body". I will add that headaches are not caused from a deficiency of Feverfew (common headache remedy) either.

The simple fact is you need to take action. Action is what makes the difference in life. As Nike says, "Just Do It". That one little step is all it takes to reach your goals and dreams. And it's most often not the big changes that you make that will matter most; rather, it is all the tiny little ones you make along the way that will last forever.

It is said that men and women are creatures of habit; slaves to habit in fact. Good habits are the key to success and bad habits lead down a path towards failures, sickness and unhappiness. If we are indeed slaves to habit, we need to be slaves to good habits. Habits are formed through repetition. So don't be lazy and don't make excuses. Get educated, make some changes and repeat this behavior to keep the process going. You'll find that what you give up (i.e. your morning coffee) will come back to you many times over in health, energy and control over your own life. On the other side awaits a better, healthier and happier life for you and your family!

Cappuccino - Bakeries' Good Baked Beans

Want the absolutely perfect dessert to go with your coffee? Go to your local bakery. Want the best and most tasty coffee beans available? Yes, go to a bakery, but one for beans. Of course, you will never find a listing for this type of bakery, but there are speciality shops that still roast your cappuccino beans by hand. Most of the time, these shops use top quality roasters to infuse mouth-watering flavours and aromas into the beans. This assures that every blend and bean remains consistent.

The fine art of coffee roasting is a pleasure and matter of pride for these stores, not just a quick fix flavouring process. They clearly understand all the attributes of a coffee bean – sizes, shapes, colours, and densities. They know that each bean needs different roasting temperatures and the right timing to reach the best flavours. Of course, your input is greatly valued and is critical. The best bakeries rely on their customer sales to indicate the real success of their roasting process because they can understand how best to emphasise your beans' best flavours and aromas.

The deeper roast definitely does help. There are no excuses for poorly roasted beans. Canned coffees are roasted, but only to a certain degree. Any coffee machine can roast your green beans and turn them brown, regulating temperature and puffing out a heap of smoke. However, the experts use a deeper roasting process – thick black curling and even fiery smelling smoke will not do. This ensures the best body, flavourings and acid levels. This can make the final product truly perfect and dance with lively flavour in your mouth. If the bean isn't roasted properly, all this becomes fruitless.

Rushing the roasting process is one thing that coffee experts know is a killer – slowness is the key. Believe it or not, some experts lovingly talk to the beans throughout the entire process to ascertain what more is required to produce the best roast. Whatever the experts' eccentricities, they make sure your roast is done to perfection.

You can verify that the proper roasting procedure was used for your beans before buying them. Crack a bean open. Good beans will be dark inside and lighter outside. The badly roasted bean, especially if it is roasted quickly, will be light inside and very dark on the outside. This means it has been burnt and is not worth buying!

Make a Responsible Furniture Purchase

While the practice of sustainability and responsibility may not be in line with much of corporate America's philosophy of infinite economic growth, there are choices you can make that will have a lasting impact on the planet we leave to our children and future generations to come. Small acts of responsibility, like recycling and conserving water may not seem like much at the time, and may not pay dividends in your lifetime, but take pride and comfort in the fact that you are doing your part. That's really all each of us can do.

Another area where you have the power to enact change is in the wood products you purchase. Most of you probably never gave a second thought to where that new coffee table or bed frame came from. And that's fine; chances are you weren't armed with the information compiled here. But after reading the following, you will no longer be able to claim ignorance nor turn a blind eye to these catastrophic environmental concerns. My hope is that by the end of this short essay, you see the huge social and ecological advantages of purchasing wood products that are certified as sustainably harvested, and that you make a concerted, conscious effort to seek out these responsibly manufactured products and also pass this information on to family and friends.

So what exactly does 'sustainably harvested' mean, you might be asking. Sustainably harvested wood comes from protected, regulated forests; ensuring ecosystems aren't impacted by the loss of trees and that replanting occurs after harvesting. The basic tenet is that the amount of goods and services yielded from a forest should be at a level the forest is capable of producing without degrading the soil, watershed features or seed source for the future. Sustainable harvesting also takes into account the potential damage to vegetation and wildlife. While there are a few different methods of harvesting trees in these regulated forests, the most common mimic natural forces such as fallen trees, insect infestation, and forest fires.

We've all heard the motto "save the rainforest." But why does the rainforest need saving and not the forests of North America and Europe? The fact is that while much clear-cutting was done to pave the way for urbanization and industrialization, regulations and governing bodies are now in place to ensure responsible use of the forests in Europe in North America. Most of the world's rainforests, however, are located in developing countries where establishing governance of and enforcing responsible use of the land is almost impossible. Slash and burn as well as clear-cutting techniques are often used in rainforest areas not for the wood, but to clear space to plant crops that irresponsibly deplete the soil, leaving it infertile and practically useless after only a few yields.

The impact of deforestation on the environment is currently being felt all over the earth. From the regulation of groundwater to the moisture in the atmosphere, a major function of forests is the management of the world's finite water supply. Cleared areas are more susceptible to flash floods and soil depletion due to run-off and on a larger scale, deforestation has been linked to tsunamis, forest fires, volcanic eruptions, and our current climate crisis or state of global warming.

What you can do as a responsible consumer is to make sure your wood furniture purchases are all products made from sustainably harvested wood. In most cases this isn't a very difficult task and won't cost you any extra money. Many retailers, such as only carry wood products from manufacturers whose wood comes from forests managed by one the main third-party certification entities. These include the Canadian Standards Association, the Forest Stewardship Council, and the Sustainable Forest Initiative. As of December, 2006, there were over 2.4 million square kilometers of certified forest, with over 1.2 million of that certified in Canada alone.

Cappuccino - The Legends Behind Coffee

The legendary cup of cappuccino seems like just a mere drink that brings up maybe a romantic gathering with some old boyfriend, but who would think that real romance and a massive industry would revolve around it. Coffee's warm, dark and aromatic fluid has drawn many a person into a coffeehouse, not just recently, but from its very early beginnings.

There are countless legends as to its origins, but the most historically reliable is 500 BC, from Ethiopia. Travelers were so intrigued with its stimulating properties that they transported it to the Saudi Arabian Peninsula. It was in Arabia that the mysteriously delicious drink would be named – coffee.

The commercialization, mass production and distribution of coffee were born in the Renaissance. It became known as the ‘heatherish liquid'. By the 1700's, in Europe, the Middle East, North and South America, and Asia, coffee had infiltrated every level of society.

Even medicinal properties were attributed throughout history. Coffee could do miraculous things. Men's sperm could reach super speeds, swim longer and farther in liquid infused with coffee. This was thanks to caffeine. Harvard University did a major study for 20 years, and concluded that coffee could help diabetes. Some found a lowering of cirrhosis in the liver and a decrease in the severity of asthma.

There were many claims made about coffee's antioxidants. Coffee kept hearts far healthier, but the debate about that is still going on. Coffee is claimed to be a diuretic and helps you urinate more frequently. I personally do not agree with that one. However, other studies show coffee as the degenerator of the nervous system, and an insomnia drug. Apparently, it is supposed to make a good insecticide.

Whatever its attributes, good or bad, coffee is not going away. Coffee is second only to the oil industry as a commodity in dollar volume production. It is a major economic booster all round.

Coffee, the 'black gold' of the world stock markets is growing ever popular. Over 400 billion boiling cups of it are drunk each year. It is traded on all the major exchanges, including New York, London, Lima and Hong Kong. If you add to that the economic boom from what we buy in coffee daily – beans, roasters, grinders, cups and brewing machines.

The coffee business future is good. It continues to rise as a basic commodity and there are so many special retail prices going now. Special shops deal in just coffee in such variety of blends and types. If you want an espresso, then you can buy different grades of brewers and roaster, which were invented in 1901. Home coffee brewing allows for single, straight, double, and long shots. What about cappuccino, latte, or mocha? Every ingredient required can be accessed by a quick button push. Flavored blends are as numerous as wines and so easy to prepare. Add additional flavors caramel, fruit or vanilla. With flavors and money combined, it is not surprising that coffee is what legends are made of.

Espresso And Coffee - Fantastic Gift Ideas

Imagine what a great thing it would be to receive a coffeepot as a gift, not just any one, but an antique one. Most people would never think of this variety of gift, even if the person they are buying for collects antiques. Interestingly enough this type of gift is reasonably easy to locate and very inexpensive. Whatever the case, it will be greatly appreciated.

The appeal came to me by pure accident. In my basement, I found a dusty, but attractive espresso maker. Our home is fairly old and the previous house owner left varied things behind after she left. There was this antique machine for making not just coffee, but espresso. It was something that one of my relatives had always wanted.

An elderly aunt loves antiques. I was aware her passion for washing basins, coffee grinders and dry sinks, I didn't know that this little gift would please her so much. She's lucky because I almost gathered up the heap of junk in the basement and put it out with the garbage. I probably would never have noticed it otherwise.

I have noticed many different types of coffee machines, but this one was unique. The coffeepot itself was not made from glass, but it was some sort of metal. It had handles on either side of the espresso machine, but it was very dirty and need of some polishing.

I did the right thing by not throwing out those abandoned items. My aunt is a novice expert when it comes to antiques. I decided to get her opinion on its value and discovered it was more valuable than I had realized.

My aunt was a wealth of knowledge. I was so impressed by her expertise that I decided she should have this. It was the best way I could show her my appreciation.

Coffee machines, whether they are antique or not are great gifts. There are so many different varieties. Some make espresso; some make just regular coffee. Some machines take up a small space on your kitchen surface and make up to 5 cups, whereas others take over a huge corner and look more like the ones you see in coffee-houses. If the person you are buying the coffee machine hates cluttered kitchen surfaces, there are even machines that fit under cupboards just like microwaves. For a real treat, coffee percolators, which were popular from the 50's to the 70's, can still be found in second-hand and antique stores for next to nothing. Just give them a bit of a polish and you have the perfect gift for that special person.

Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans?

If you have heard of chocolate covered espresso beans, you may have decided to try them for your espresso coffee maker or you may have decided to give them a try or get them as a gift for that certain someone who has everything. You may have considered just going to a gourmet shop, but if you want to get a deal, the best thing is to buy them wholesale on the Internet. How do you go about buying them wholesale safely? You don't want to risk giving your credit card numbers to a site that is not legitimate, and possibly risk identity theft by doing so. We all know stories about people who put their credit card number on a site that was not protected, and the next thing they knew, they had tons of bills and maybe even their bank account was debited. If you not careful about shopping on line, it can happen.

But it does not have to be dangerous to shop for chocolate covered espresso beans (or any other product, for that matter) on line. Make sure you know how to take the right precautions.

The first thing you have to do is make sure you are going to get the product you want. If a site doesn't have illustrations, you may end up ordering a product you did not want. You also have to be sure to read any warnings or any of the fine print that may allow substitutions, etc. And you always have to be careful of offers that seem way too cheap. You know what the value should be, and if it too cheap, something has to be wrong with the product, or maybe you are not going to be getting the right product.

Next, be a savvy Internet shopper. Make sure you do not give out any information that is not directly related to the purchase. Be very wary of any site that asks for your social security number, your driver's license or any bank account information. All they should need is the delivery address and the card you are charging to.

Once you have made a purchase on line, make sure you have a record of it. This way if the product you think you ordered is not what you received, you have some proof. Make sure you have the name of the vendor, the name of the website, a copy of the confirmed order with quantity, price, delivery address and estimated delivery date. If there are any problems down the line, you want to have all of this information at your fingertips.

If, even after this advice, you are leery of shopping Olin, you can go to the site of the wholesaler and just get the 800 number listed there. This way, you can have a catalog sent to you, and you can order the old fashioned way by sending in an order form or calling in an order.

High Quality Grinds For A Great Espresso

Buying presents is always tricky, particularly when the person you have to buy for seems to have exquisite taste in antique items and you feel you have neither the judgment nor the bank balance to buy them something they will love. I have always had this problem with my father, whose house is full of tasteful and valuable antiques. I did, however find the perfect gift totally by accident when clearing out the attic of my new house a couple of years ago.

The previous owners had left a few boxes in the attic, we thought by accident. We contacted them to let them know their mistake but they said they didn't want the contents and we should throw it away. Rather grumpily I set to removing and disposing of the items, after all we had enough of our own junk to sort out without having to deal with someone else's.

Having dragged the boxes into the kitchen I thought I would take a little look through them before chucking them out. Fortunately my father arrived to help out with furniture arranging, just as I had decided there was nothing of value in there.

He immediately seized on an odd piece of small machinery that I had left sitting on the counter. When I asked him what it was, he pointed rather scornfully at my new shiny stainless steel electric coffee grinder and said it was pretty much the same thing, but much less noisy, and didn't remove all the flavor from the beans!

He even knew the make, apparently a size two, cast iron, two wheel grinder made by Coles. That didn't mean a lot to me but I was glad I hadn't thrown it in the trash, particularly when he said it would look fantastic in his kitchen after a little loving restoration.

Of course I gave it to him there and then, he had been such a help with the move and it was really unusual to be able to give him something that he really liked. It now stands proudly on his countertop, next to the espresso maker, and judging by the gorgeous coffee smell in the house is in almost constant use. It was restored carefully so has lost none of its original character and is a real talking point for his visitors.

Every time he visits he asks if I have found anything else in the house, but sadly that was the only treasure we uncovered. He also brings a bag of coffee, freshly ground that morning, so he doesn't have to suffer the apparently inferior brew that we produce with our new fangled machines. As he usually leaves some behind for my pre-work espresso the next day, I have started to see his point. Perhaps an antique coffee grinder would make the perfect present for someone who doesn't realise how awful electric coffee grinders can be as well!

Jack Blacksmith regularly publishes reports on areas similar to coffee and espresso. His abstracts on espresso maker are found on his site .

Why The Fish Tank Coffee Table Is Dreaded By Fish

If I were a fish I would hope and prey I did not go to a modern trendy home where the owners liked the latest craze. At the moment the latest trend is the fish tank coffee table. Although this type of aquarium looks stunning it is a death trap for fish. They are beautiful looking items of furniture and become the centre of attraction since you cannot fail to see and admire it.

Why the Fish Tank Coffee Table are Called Death Traps for the Fish?

The fish tank coffee table is a great piece of interior home décor; however, the same fish tank coffee table is actually murdering the fish. The reason they are cruel to marine life is because this type of aquarium gives very little place for installing proper filters, and it allows very little maintenance. The fish have height but they need the width as well in order to feel comfortable. The fish actually feel very uncomfortable if they have to swim between the different heights that make the fish tank coffee table.A solution to this problem would be mechanical fish.

If you do not want your fish in this type of aquarium to die a slow and very painful death then the best solution is to replace your live fish with mechanical fish. This way your fish tank coffee table stays as a splendid interior decoration piece without harming anyone or anything.

A Modern Looking Fish Tank Coffee Table

If you must have live fish in your fish tank coffee table then a large rectangular one would be best. This would also enable you to install adequate filters underneath the base of the table. This type of aquarium will be better for fish to live. So in order for the fish to be comfortable, they will need to be accommodated in a rectangular and long aquarium. The larger the surface the more fish can live in there.

Alternative Fish Tank Coffee Tables That Do Not Have Live Fish!

There is another choice for people who really must have a fish tank coffee table and do not like the idea of mechanical fish. You can fill a tank with colorful decorations and plants and add to it oxygen pumps which let out small and big bubbles. This, in combination with good lighting, can be as beautiful as an aquarium, without making you guilty of any cruelty. There are some lovely looking plants and colored stones and ornaments which are available to buy at very cheap prices and would really make your display the centre of attention.

This informative website at has loads of information on fish, aquariums, fish tank stands and gives advice related to keeping fish and what type of tank to buy.
